Art Deco Miniature Screen Scene

Most of the members of Garden City Miniatures have been working on this little project since the start of the year. We finished the last workshop yesterday.

We meet on the third Saturday of the month at St Marks Church in Opawa, Christchurch. This was an ongoing project, Judy Straw was the main tutor, with other members of our club tutoring different workshops. We could choose which ones we wished to partake in.

The photos in this report are all of my own creation - mistakes/alterations/amendments/deletions/additions included!

The first workshop, was to decorate the base and screen, and put it all together along with the black shelves. (Sorry I don't have any photos of this.)

When we made the clock, candle stick & snuffer - I decided to add my little doll dressed in lacy black (a purchase from Convention last October).

I added a crystal bottle (piece of broken jewellery to the middle back of the display. (Hard to photograph - but it is there!).

Next to the hand holding the necklace, I added two handbags (actually buttons), and the small change purse (which is a bracelet charm with the jump ring snipped off!)

I was away from Club on the month the hats where made, so I made this pink little number at home - trying to recall the method from a workshop I attended around 5 years ago! My 8 year old son informed me I needed to include a mirror - so this is a little hand mirror charm I had, painted silver with the addition of a small piece of miniature mirror (easily cut with scissors) attached.

This shelf is different to everyone else's. I think the original sample had the shoes (from the box underneath) displayed on this shelf. I kept the shoes in the box, and tucked the shoe horn in beside them. The vase on the right is a bead from the Oamaru Bead Shop, with feathers; the middle "glass vase" another bead I purchased at our Club Garage Sale in May.
I made the tissue box out of square dowel, wrapping paper and 1 ply of  real tissue paper. The handbag in front is another "clip" handbag. (On the original sample this handbag is displayed beside the hand.)

 

 

I love this little bag we made, it even has four little silver pins underneath making it look very realistic.

The last workshop day, we could choose to make a silver drape (to go over the chair); an Art Deco wooden chair and a fox fur. I didn't make the drape, but I did make the chair and the very gorgeous fox fur. (Very un-p.c. these days, I know, but all the rage in the 1920's!) And don't despair,only acrylic (I think!) fur and fimo was made to create him.

I really enjoyed making this project, and I think it will look quite nice in my bedroom. Thank you for taking the time to have a look.

Miniature Knitted Lamb and Owls.

Today I decided to make an iconic New Zealand animal... no sorry, it's not a kiwi! A little bitty white lamb. This is my first attempt.  I think she is quite cute, but I may make some slight alterations if I make any more.
A month or so ago, a friend challenged me to make some owls... here is the result.

Socks

My first ever attempt at creating my own sock pattern.
At least it fits! So far so good.

Feather Brush Yarns - simple knit/no shaping top!

I purchased two skeins of hand dyed wool from the very talented Rachel from www.featherbrushyarns.com. (Please check out her face book page to view some gorgeous yarns.)

Both skeins are 100% wool in 8 ply. One colour was 'Bahamas' (beautiful turquoise blue), the variegated one 'Broadshorts'.

After weeks and weeks of trawling through ravelry.com using all the filters eg 8ply, meterage etc I just hadn't found anything suitable. I then remembered the simple jersey I had made using the pattern from Spotlight.

I knew I didn't have enough wool to follow the pattern, so using the same concept and lots of 'guesstimates' & weighing of yarn  to ensure I wouldn't run out! I made the top part. (Please refer to my previous Spotlight blog for more info re this.)

To show off the variegated yarn to its full potential,  I decided I wanted the stripes to go up and down. I simply measured around my body, and using a 5 st moss border for the bottom band I knitted the torso in stocking stitch to the same measurement.

The best part of this project was I finished knitting on Saturday and as my mother was visiting for the weekend,  I got her to sew it up for me! ;) Thanks Mum!

I love how this simple pattern works with variegated yarns, as it is reversible you can simply choose which side you like the best!

Teeny Weeny Bunnies

Easter is on its way... but don't worry, these little bunnies won't be able to carry too many calories!

Bling Rings

I have just finished making these 'bling rings'.

I have had the ring bases in my stash for a while and purchased some 2-part epoxy clay a while ago too after watching some you tube  videos and deciding I just had to have a play!

Last weekend I bought some crystals from a bead shop in Christchurch and today I finally got to sit down to put them all together.

If you make your own jewellery and haven't tried two-part epoxy clay, I recommend you give it a go. I used Crystal Clay. So much easier and less messy than resin, and unlike fimo there is no baking involved.

The first two rings I made I tried to make them in a pretty organised way. The next two I made with a black background and put the crystals on in a haphazard way, just filling in the gaps. - I actually prefer the finished product doing it this way!
